Everyday Fire Safety in Your Property

As a Blue Door Property Guardian, there are a number of practical measures you can take as part of your daily routine:

✔️ In the Kitchen

  • Never leave cooking unattended.

  • Keep flammable items (tea towels, packaging, oils) away from hobs.

  • Turn off appliances when not in use.

✔️ Electrical Safety

  • Never overload sockets or daisy chain extension leads.

  • Do not use damaged cables or faulty appliances.

  • Use Brand Cables rather than cheap imports that are not regulated.

  • Switch off and unplug appliances before leaving the property.

✔️ Heating

  • Keep portable oil heaters well clear of furniture and fabrics.

  • Never keep a heater on when you are going out

  • Check a heater has a thermostat to save energy.

🔔 Fire Detection & Equipment

As a Blue Door Property Guardian, you should:

  • Never cover a smoke alarm

  • Familiarise yourself with the location of fire extinguishers and fire blankets.

  • Never tamper with fire safety equipment or block fire exits or corridors.

  • Know the Meeting Point outside the building if the Fire Alarm is activated

If you notice a fault, missing equipment, or anything that could pose a risk, report it to the Head Guardian or the Blue Door team immediately.

🏃 Knowing What to Do in an Emergency

In the event of a fire:

  1. Get out, stay out, and call 999.

  2. Do not attempt to fight the fire unless it is very small and you have been trained to use fire-fighting equipment.

  3. Do not stop to collect belongings.

  4. Follow the property’s evacuation procedures and use stairs, not lifts.

Every guardian should know:

  • Their nearest fire exits

  • The assembly point (where applicable)

  • The evacuation plan for their property

🤝 Shared Responsibility

Fire safety works best when everyone plays their part. Keeping communal areas clear, following property guidelines, and reporting hazards promptly all help to protect not just you, but your fellow guardians and the buildings themselves.

🏡 Our Commitment

Blue Door Property Guardians works closely with property owners to ensure fire risk assessments are carried out and that appropriate safety measures are in place. We continually review safety standards and provide guidance to help guardians live securely and confidently in our properties.

✅ In Summary

Fire safety is about awareness, prevention, and preparedness. Small actions — like unplugging unused appliances, keeping exits clear, and testing alarms — make a big difference.
